Does a Patient Every Need to Have a Dental Implant Removed?

dental implant Surfside, FL

Dental implants have a very high success rate. However, in some cases, implants can fail. If this happens, the implant may need to be removed. The good news is that a dentist can usually place the implant back in its place if it has failed the first time around.

Why a dental implant may fail

While dental implants have an extremely high success rate, they can sometimes fail. The implant is designed to integrate with the bone, which is known as osseointegration. This process can take up to many months. After it has integrated, the dentist will then be able to place the artificial tooth over the implant.

However, if the implant does not integrate with the bone properly, the implant has failed. There are several symptoms that are signs of an implant that has failed:

  • Bleeding
  • Bone loss
  • Movement of the implant
  • Pain
  • Pus in the area

A dentist can use X-rays to determine if an implant has failed or not. The dentist will be able to remove the implant and place bone grafts in the area to build the bone up again. After the bone grafts have healed, the dentist will be able to attempt the implant again.

Peri-implantitis

After a patient has had a dental implant for a while, it is still possible for the implant to fail. The most common reason is because of peri-implantitis. This is an infection of the gum and bone where the implant is located. It is similar to periodontal disease because both problems result in the gum and bone deteriorating. The symptoms are similar to periodontal disease because the gums will bleed and leak pus.

This problem can be treated through antibiotics, better cleaning and surgery to repair the bone. Unfortunately, these treatments may not be effective. If the treatments are not effective, the implant may need to be removed.

Proper care for dental implants

To lower the risk for peri-implantitis, patients should care for the implants properly at home. Even though the implant cannot get cavities, patients should still brush the implant along with the rest of their teeth. This can prevent harmful bacteria from building up on the tooth and causing damage to the surrounding teeth.

Patients should also floss their teeth once a day. This can help prevent bacteria from settling between the teeth along the gumline, which could contribute to peri-implantitis. A dentist may also recommend that patients use a water flosser to help remove bits of food from between the teeth. An interdental brush can help clean difficult places to clean around the teeth.

Visit a dentist

While dental implants can fail in some cases, the success rate of dental implants is 98%, according to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. The good news is that even if your dental implant fails, there are ways to repair it. Visiting a dentist regularly can help prevent problems that may cause a dental implant to fail.
