How You Can Restore Your Smile With Implant Supported Dentures

Implant supported dentures are dental restorations created to replace a row of missing teeth in the upper or lower jaw. The loss of teeth can be devastating to an individual since it compromises the appearance of the smile and inhibits essential teeth functions. Regular dentures do not offer a complete solution because they are prone to slipping out, and the adhesives may get messy. Implant supported dentures can restore the beauty of a smile through carefully-placed dental implants.
Qualifications for implant supported dentures
Eligible candidates for implant supported dentures include persons who have lost several teeth on the upper or lower jaw. To qualify for the dental implant surgery, the patient should be in good health, preferably a nonsmoker, and have enough bone density and quality to hold the dental implants. If the jawbone tissue is not deep enough, the dentist may recommend a bone graft or sinus lift surgery to augment the tissue. This extends the treatment period by two to three months.
Understanding the treatment process
During the first consultation, the dental implant practitioner will perform a comprehensive assessment to determine if the patient is eligible for the process. If all is in order, the dentist will schedule a date for dental implant surgery.
During the procedure, the implant dentist places the titanium posts into the jawbone surgically. The type of denture and the required level of stability determines the number of implants. Typically, the oral surgeon will insert between four to eight implants. The patient will get a temporary denture to use while the bone fuses with the implant.
After the patient fully recovers and osseointegration is complete, the dentist will take impressions of the patient’s mouth. This mold goes to a dental laboratory that fabricates the custom implant supported dentures to ensure they fit correctly and restore the beauty of the patient’s smile.
While the denture is in production, the oral surgeon will perform a simple procedure to connect abutments to the dental implants. These connectors hold the dentures and serve as a firm foundation. Once the dental lab completes the denture, which usually takes about two weeks, the dentist will carefully fit it into position.
Reasons to choose implant supported dentures
Although conventional dentures can provide many of the cosmetic effects of implant dentures, they are less stable in the mouth and prone to slipping out of place. This may cause embarrassment and often prevents the individual from enjoying favorite meals. Unlike regular dentures that rely on suction and dental adhesives to stay in position, implant dentures use ball-and-socket or bar connectors for better stability. Implant supported dentures also prevent jawbone deterioration, preserve facial structure, allow patients to smile confidently, and offer long-lasting results.
