Implant supported dentures are dentures upheld by four or more implants inserted into the jawbone. These implants help hold the denture securely to ensure better stability, function, and comfort. Dentists usually recommend implant supported dentures for patients who have lost several or all their teeth on the lower or upper jaw.
The treatment process starts with a consultation with the dental implant dentist. During the appointment, the practitioner will evaluate the patient’s medical and dental histories. This may include taking X-rays and impressions of the teeth and gums. Sometimes, the dentist may request a CT scan to show the location of the sinuses and nerves to ensure they are not affected by the procedure. The CT scan may also indicate if the patient has the required bone density, and it can reveal suitable positions for the implants.
If the patient does not already wear a full denture, the dentist will fabricate one. The temporary denture is used until the implant denture is ready. To reduce the overall cost of treatment, the dentist may decide to use this as the permanent denture. This means modifying it with attachments to hold it securely to the implants. The entire process takes about four appointments spread over several weeks. The temporary denture also helps guide the position of the implants.
During the first surgery, the dentist places the implants in the jawbone. This involves making a cut on the gum where the implants will sit. The surgeon makes a hole in the bone to hold the implant, and the incision is stitched. After the surgery, the patient waits four to six months for the jawbone to fuse properly with the implants. During this time, the patient wears temporary dentures.
Once the implants have integrated with the bone, the dentist schedules another minor surgery. This involves making an incision in the gum to reveal the head of the implant. The dentist places a collar or cap on the implant to guide the healing of the gum tissue. The collar remains there for about 10 to 14 days. After that, the collar is replaced with regular abutments that connect the dentures to the implants. The dentist makes another impression of the gum tissue and abutment to create a model to fabricate the denture framework and teeth.
This is the final stage of placing the denture mechanism on the abutment. The patient will try the new implant supported dentures for the first time to see if they fit correctly. If the bar or ball mechanism works well with the denture, the framework will be screwed into position. Ball attachments snap onto the denture while bar attachments are clipped into place.
